4140 grade of steels is a chromium, molybdenum alloy. The 4140 steel plate is low AS designed for excellent corrosion resistance properties. - 4140 and 4340 have similar traces of sulfur, phosphorus, silicon and molybdenum, and manganese. The carbon content in the 4340 grade is higher, but the content of chromium in the 4140 grade is higher. The major differentiating factor is the presence of nickel in the 4340 grade giving it excellent tolerances in stress-induced systems.

- 4140 is designed to possess a tensile and yield strength of 655mpa and 415mpa, respectively. 1045 grade is designed with a tensile and yield strength of 565mpa and 310mpa, respectively. This gives the 4140 higher strength than the 1045 grade.
