The chemistry of this precipitation hardened alloy consists of 66.5% Nickel, which not only forms the major alloyant but also gives the alloy good mechanical strength and its corrosion resistance properties. Apart from nickel, the additions of aluminium, titanium and copper are what improves the corrosion resistance property of UNS N05500 in seawater. The yield strength of Monel K500 is 100 KSi and is said to be almost three times more than Monel 400.

In a cold worked condition, the Rockwell hardness is 29, whereas the melting point for UNS No 5500 ranges between 2400° F - 2460° F. While this nickel based alloy can be used across a wide temperature bracket, the impact strength of Werkstoff Nr. 2.4375 is good even down to a temperature of -20.2°F or lower.
