Table Of Content
SS 446 is a high chromium ferritic grade. The 446 Stainless Steel Plate has an excellent chemical composition giving it enhanced strength. These modules show superb resistance against oxidation and sulfidation. 446 SS Plate is used in temperatures ranging between 1500 to 2100 degrees F however, the strength of these modules at this temperature is low. The 446 Stainless Steel Sheet has a high impact ductile to brittle temperature and can be welded following standard welding procedures. Pre-heating coupled with post-heating of the SS 446 Sheet should be performed at temperatures between 250-400 degrees F.
We pride ourselves as Dealer and Distributor of Werkstoff No 1.4762 Perforated Sheet, we supply and maintain ready stock of SS 446 Sheet , see SS 446 Vs SS316
SS 446 and SS316 are two versatile components within the stainless grade. Both these modules can be differentiated based on certain features.
- ASTM A240 Type 446 Plate belongs to a ferritic grade of stainless steel. 316 grade belongs to an austenitic grade of stainless .
- ASME SA240 446 Stainless Steel Sheet is designed with a chemical composition of 23% chromium and 0.25% nickel. The 316 grade has a chemical content of 16% chromium and 10% nickel coupled with 2-3% molybdenum.
- SS 316 shows higher resistance against corrosion compared to the SS 446 Shim Sheet. The molybdenum content propels these grades to perform better in stress-induced systems.
- UNS S44600 Strip has higher strength when compared to a standard 316 stainless grade.

What is 446 Stainless Steel Welding Process?
446 stainless modules can be welded following standard welding procedures except for the oxyacetylene welding procedure. The material has to be pre-heated and post heated at temperatures between 300 to 600 degrees F. AWS E310 or E312 austenitic filler material is usually preferred to maximize the ductility of the weld deposit. It is important to maintain a difference between the coefficient of thermal expansion at the base and the weld metal.

Why 446 SS Plate use in seawater equipment?
SS 446 modules are designed with a superior content of chromium, aluminum, and silicon. The Stainless Steel 446 hot Rolled Plate is processed at high temperatures in mills resulting in creating compounds that are strong and robust. The AISI 446 Cold Rolled Plate is subjected to further rolling allowing them to possess superior corrosion and oxidation resistance properties.
This superior tolerance allows the SS 446 Perforated Sheet to be utilized in different marine grade applications. The temperature and pressures in seawater keep fluctuating, which the Werkstoff No 1.4762 Coil can withstand. The high-octane modules exhibit remarkable strength giving them excellent resistance against wear. The SUS 446 Foil is employed to cover and protect different modules in seawater systems.
