Intended to be used for those applications which require resistance to pitting as well as corrosion, SUS 904L is a super austenitic stainless steel grade.
Extensively used in the chemical processing industry, plates produced from 904L Stainless Steel have excellent performance especially in the manufacture of phosphate based fertilizers. Whether to improve its corrosion resistance properties or to improve its mechanical properties or to add value to the ASTM A240 904L SS specified sheets, plates, coils or strips, various kinds of finishes could be applied to its surface. Most commonly, the AISI 904L UNS N08904 is finished with Hairline, satin, Embossed, 8K Mirror, brush, matt, PVC film, Hot rolled plate, Cold rolled Plate or laser film finishes.
Apart from the above mentioned finishes, the ASTM A240 Type 904L could be implemented with finishes such as BA, BA NO(8), NO.4, 2B, 2D, NO.8.HL as well as SATIN (Met with Plastic Coated). In comparison to grade 304, the SA 240 Gr 904L SS strips have superior tensile properties. For instance, the yield strength of plates made from 904L is about 490 Mpa, while its shear strength is valued at 73.0 GPa. With a melting point ranging between 2372 – 2534°F, the usual standard thickness the SS Werkstoff No 1.4539 shim stock is produced ranges between 4.8 mm to 50.8mm
904l is a non-stabilized austenitic grade. 904L Steel sheet is designed with a chemical concentration of 19% to 23% of chromium with 23% to 28% of nickel coupled with 4-5% of molybdenum. SS 904L Sheet has moderate to high corrosion resistance in stress-induced systems. The superior concentration exhibits outstanding toughness and formability. The Stainless Steel 904L Plate is resistant against pitting by acids in aqueous media.
It was originally designed to be tolerant in environments containing dilute sulfuric acids but has evolved over time. SS 904l Plate exhibits excellent formability with enhanced stress corrosion cracking across different environments. The low carbon 904l stainless plate can be welded following standard welding procedures. Exhibiting good drawability, these components become less machinable once they are cold rolled. The 904l steel plate can work in temperatures between 1562 to 2102 degrees F in an array of environments
What is ASTM A240 Grade 904L Plate?
This specification covers not only the chemical but also mechanical property requirements for a plate, sheet, and strip made from chromium alloy based stainless steel grades such as alloy 904L, which are designed to be used for the construction of pressure vessels and for general applications as well.
904l and 316l are low carbon versions of their respective grades. The major factor differentiating them is the content of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum engulfed in their respective chemical compositions. 904l has a slightly higher content of these chemicals, making them more resistive to corrosion and pitting by chlorides in different environments. However, the 316l sheet is cheaper and more easily available compared to the 904l sheet of stainless steel.

What are SS 904l Material Properties?
- Mechanical properties
The 904l stainless Steel Plate is designed with a minimum tensile strength of 490Mpa. These plates exhibit a minimum yield strength of 220Mpa. They can be easily elongated by a minimum of 36% while having a hardness between 70-90 Rockwell B.
- Physical properties
The 904l stainless steel sheet possesses a density of 7.95g/cm3 with a melting range between 1300 to 1390 degrees C. These components exhibit a modulus of elasticity of 190 Gpa with thermal conductivity of 12.9 W/m-°K. They exhibit an electrical resistivity of 95.2 Microhm-cm at 20°C while having a specific heat of 450 J/kg-°K at 0–100°C.

904l and 304 are contrasting stainless steel grades that can be differentiated by certain features. 904l SS is designed with a chemical content of max 23% chromium, max 28% nickel, and max 4% molybdenum. 304 grade on the contrary has a max of 20% chromium with 12% max nickel content.
The higher content of chromium, nickel coupled with the presence of molybdenum makes the 904l grade have superior corrosion resistance. The molybdenum content also gives this grade resistance to pitting by chlorides, which is not possible with the 304 grade.
Stainless Steel 904l Properties
SS 904l is a low carbon austenitic grade having diverse properties and functionality. The ASTM A240 Type 904L Plate is designed in with a thickness of above 6mm and utilized in providing support and stability to different modules in stress-induced systems. The Stainless Steel 904L hot Rolled Plate is processed at high temperatures in mills above its recrystallization value. This allows it to possess good formability. The AISI 904L Cold Rolled Plate is processed further after the initial hot rolling process giving these modules enhanced properties that exhibit superior corrosion and oxidation resistance.
ASME SA240 904L Stainless Steel Sheetis a module that is designed with a thickness of less than 6mm. These modules show resistance to pitting by chlorides and are employed in the module to add aesthetical appeal to the component, as seen in the SS 904L Perforated Sheet. These sheets are stamped or punched manually or mechanically using CNC machinery. For covering material during heat treatment, the high-strength SUS 904L Foil is wrapped around the different tools. These foils are typically resistant to sulfuric and other acidic media. The ASTM B625 UNS N08904 Strip possesses excellent strength and mechanical properties, allowing it to be welded with different components in the grade.
