Stainless steel belongs to the martensitic grade of stainless steel. 420 stainless steel sheet exhibits a high carbon content having superior hardness. Designed with a chemical concentration of 12-14% of chromium, the Stainless Steel 420 Sheet exhibits good corrosion resistance properties when the metal is polished. Maximum hardness is achieved within the 420 Grade Stainless Steel Sheet if they are annealed or fully hardened. These components in the annealed condition offer enhanced ductility allowing them to be shaped precisely.
The 420 SS Sheet Metal is a modification of the 410 alloys, which can be easily hardened. These modules exhibit a hardness of a minimum of 50 HRC. Due to the hardness, the 420 Stainless Steel Plate is not generally welded but, it is possible to weld these strong modules. Some properties have to be compromised to achieve the high hardness of the Stainless Steel 420 Plate. These plates are limited to working at low temperatures due to their loss of ductility. The grade has a variety of applications. The SS 420 Plate is seen in needle valves, surgical equipment, shear blades, cutlery equipment, etc.

420 stainless steel heat treatment process
- Annealing- Stainless steel 420 components can be heated at temperatures in a range between 840 to 900 degrees C followed by a slow furnace cooling process at 600 degrees C followed by air-cooling.
- Process- The steels can be annealed at 735-785 degrees C and then air-cooled.
- Hardening- During this process, the steels is heated at temperatures between 980-1035 degrees C, followed by quenching utilizing oil or air. For heavy metals, oil quenching is preferred. To achieve good hardness tempering is performed at 150 to 370 degrees C, giving it enhanced mechanical properties.

- SS 304 grade belongs to an austenitic stainless steel grade. 420 SS Plate is a martensitic grade stainless steel component.
- SS 304 is designed with a chemical concentration of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 420 SS Sheet is made with a chemical concentration of 12-14% chromium with little to no nickel content. This is why 304 has superior corrosion resistance properties over this grade.
- The tensile and yield strength of the 420 Stainless Steel Sheet is greater than that of the 304 grade.

The martensitic grade is designed with superior hardness and strength. ASTM A240 Type 420 Plate has to be hardened perfectly to give the module enhanced corrosion and oxidation resistance in different systems. The ASME SA240 420 Stainless Steel Sheet is designed to optimize the strength and hardness characteristics of the module. The module has good ductility and can be hardened by a minimum of 50 HRC. A SS 420 Perforated Sheet in tempering temperatures in the annealed state will exhibit a hardness of 116 HB Rockwell with an elongation percent of 12%.
A Stainless Steel 420 hot Rolled Plate annealed at high temperatures of 316 degrees C will have a hardness of 115 HB Rockwell exhibiting a good impact Charpy. An AISI 420 Cold Rolled Plate annealed at 427 degrees C will exhibit a hardness of 116 HB. The elongation percentage of this module will dwindle further. A SS 420 Shim Sheet annealed in tempering temperature of 538 degrees C will exhibit a hardness of 112 HB. Similarly, the components of the UNS S42000 Strip annealed at temperatures of 593 degrees C will possess a minimum hardness of 107HB.
The impact Charpy of these modules will be 22 v. When a Werkstoff No 1.4007 Coil is tempered at temperatures of about 650 degrees C. The hardness of these modules will be Rockwell 103HB. The SUH 420 Foil has a good elongation percent of 20% in this temperature range.
